Welcome to Rosalind Franklin Class

Teacher: Miss Goodall

Welcome to Franklin Class! We are the Year 1 children at Scissett CE Academy. Our teacher is Miss Goodall and she loves to teach in Year 1. Mrs McGregor, Miss Stone, Mrs Martin, Mrs Boulby and Mrs Glen also work in our classroom over the week and they are amazing at helping us to reach our potential!

In Year 1, we work hard to build on the skills that we have learnt last year in Reception, with a greater emphasis on independence. Our routine is a little more structured than Reception, as we have lots of different lessons to cover! We have lots of exciting topics this year, from the Great Fire of London to exploring Victorian holidays.

We can’t wait to show you what we learn over the year – keep checking back to stay up to date with our learning journey! If you would like to find out more about Phonics in Year 1, please see our Phonics page.

Rosalind Franklin Class - Spring 2025

Year 1 Multiskills
Year 1 loved visiting Shelley College recently with the other pyramid first schools. They were able to experience lots of activities with their peers and they were great ambassadors for our school.

Little Red Riding Hood

Year 1 have recently started their new text "Little Red Riding Hood" in English. Their first experience day was to go on a woodland walk and collect interesting vocabulary - just like when our main character went to visit Granny! We love this unit so far and can't wait to explore it more.#

Gymnastics in the Making

Franklin class have begun their gymnastics sessions this week, getting off to a brilliant start. The children learnt how to extend their poses to make sure their bodies are as strong and balanced as possible. We also learnt different gym positions such as pike, straddle and star. Our next challenge is to put these together into short routines - watch this space!

Watercolour in Art

Year 1 have had a very creative start to 2025! We have begun our watercolour topic in art and we have considered different ways of mark making as well as the three primary colours. Miss Goodall can't wait to see where their imaginations take the new skills they have learnt.

Rosalind Franklin Class - Autumn 2024

Designing Houses from 1666
As part of our history topic on the Great Fire of London, Year 1 designed and built their very own Tudor houses. The children took great care to make the houses look as authentic as possible. We even had a replica of St Paul's Cathedral delivered to our class. We have loved learning about the Great Fire of London, there are some fab historians in our class.

Crocus Planting

Year 1 have been working with Denby Dale Rotary Club to promote the 'Purple4Polio' campaign. Today we have planted over 4000 crocus bulbs around our school and we hope that when spring comes, we will have a sea of purple to promote the campaign to end polio throughout the world. As we had so many bulbs to plant, every class in school helped us so we would like to say a big thank you to them! We also want to say a big thank you to our gardening volunteers from Denby Dale Rotary Club.

Computing

Year 1 have been working hard to use the laptops this half term and have been focussing on mouse control. Miss Stone was very impressed by the flowers that they created, especially as the trackpads were a little temperamental!

Concrete Maths

We have been focussing on the concrete aspect of maths this week when using the part whole model. The children have been focussing on using counters to find both parts and the whole. Alice and Catherine even completed an extra challenge and blew Miss Goodall away with their teamwork in problem solving – your stickers from Mr Cunningham were very well deserved!

Spiral Snails

Year 1 have extended their spiral artwork into snails. The children were free to choose which technique they wanted to replicate best and were encouraged to think of which colours would work effectively together. We now have an excellent gallery of spiralling snails in our classroom – look out for them if you visit!

Local Geography

We have been studying the local area in our Year 1 geography lessons! Using Google Earth and Google Maps, the children had to label the village of Scissett using geographical features. Some children even challenged themselves to add their own labels. What other locations can you spot?

Art Lessons

In Franklin Class, we have been considered spirals in our art lessons, to understand how we can use our whole bodies to draw. This week, we focussed on using different mediums to create spirals. We also thought about what a LOUD spiral would look like and how a quiet spiral would be different.

Reading

In Year 1, we have been thinking about our favourite books and stories. We have also learnt the difference between an author and an illustrator - our favourite class author is Julia Donaldson because she writes books that rhyme!

Maths

Franklin Class have had a wonderful start to the year in their maths lessons. We began by sorting objects by different size, colour and type. All children were able to name the groups they had made and explain why.
