Welcome to Marie Curie Class

We are the class teachers, Mrs Whittle and Mrs Lodge. We love teaching Year 3. We are excited for an amazing year filled with lots of fun topics and learning opportunities. It will be a year of Egyptians, the Stone age and much much more! This year we have named our class after the scientist, Marie Curie. In our class, we also have Mrs Brook helping us. She is amazing and will be on hand to support us in the class each days. Keep checking what we have been up to!

Marie Curie Class - Spring 2025

Charcoal Artwork

In Art, Class Curie have had a messy afternoon exploring how we can use charcoal. We’ve been experimenting with different marks and effects we can create. We are going to develop our skills to create our own charcoal pieces.

Stone Age Boy

Curie Class have started their latest writing unit about the story of Stone Age boy. We have loved using our knowledge from our History unit in our writing.

Christmas Stockings

In DT, year 3 have been designing their own festive stockings. Today we have been making our stockings, it’s been a busy afternoon of cutting, sewing and sticking.

Arctic Workshop

Year 3 was very lucky to take part in an Arctic workshop on Monday morning where they spoke with a real life explorer who lived and worked in the Arctic for nearly 20 years. She shared what life was like in these conditions and the research that she did. We saw the environment and the landscape and could compare it easily to what it would be like in Antarctica. The children then got a chance to ask some of their questions to the explorer. We finished off the morning with writing 5 things we had learnt and 5 ways we could do to help the environment. William did an amazing job in sharing his work with the explorer and the other schools involved! Well done William and Year 3 on an interesting and informative morning.

Guitar Demonstration - November 2024

Year 2 and 3 enjoyed a guitar demonstration on Friday morning. The children listened to different pieces of music from different countries. They enjoyed having a turn at playing the guitars as well. Thank you Musica Kirklees school.

Gymnastic Lessons
Well done to Year 3 who had a great PE lesson today. They worked hard in their gymnastics lessons practicing jumping and balancing.

Antarctica

In Curie class, we started our Geography topic on Antarctica. We looked at what latitude and longitude lines are and also found different countries using the lines on maps and Atlases.

African Drumming
Year 3 have had an excellent afternoon learning about African Drumming. We loved exploring the instruments and creating beats.

Instructional Writing

Last week Year 3 finished their writing unit on instructional writing. After studying instructions about “How to grow a strong mind” we created our own instructions teaching the pupils of Scissett “How to be a Scissett Star”.

Mrs Whittle was so proud of the whole class. They worked really hard on their final pieces and they were amazing! We definitely have a class of Scissett stars!

We are going to share our writing with the Reception children during our class share later this week.

Well done!

Colour Combinations

It’s been a very arty afternoon at Scissett. Year 3 have been exploring and experimenting with colour combinations. We have been looking at colours that compliment and contrast. We are going to choose from our ideas and use a combination in our project piece.

Maths Lessons

Class Curie have been working on adding and subtracting 1’s, 10’s and 100’s in our maths lessons this week. We’ve been using the base ten apparatus and pictures to support our learning.  Great work Year 3!

Virtual Visit from Hamza Yassin

Year 3 was very lucky to take part in a virtual visit from Hamza Yassin who is a famous wildlife photographer and strictly star!
The children listened to stories about his life and pictures of his various trips capturing different animals. The children answered questions and also asked questions at the end. We found out that the fastest animal in the world is a peregrine falcon, wombats produce square shaped poop and his favourite animal is a silverback gorilla! We also had a go at beating our chests like a gorilla, I think they did a really good job! :)

Science Lessons

In Science, the children have been learning about force and that we measure force in Newtons. We investigated the force that was needed to move an object along different surfaces. We found that rubber was the surface that needed the most force applied to the object to move it and a wooden table the least. We were budding scientists!

First Week Back

Curie Class have had a fantastic first week in Year 3. They’ve started learning about place value in Maths and have completed their first writing project called “The Colour Collector”.

The class explored the school environment to hunt for different colours that could be stolen by a mysterious stranger. We used these ideas to write poems.

Well done Class Curie!
