Welcome to Otsuka Class

Hello and welcome to our class! Our teacher is Mr Codling and we will also be joined by Mrs Brook. Our class is a safe, positive environment for learning and growth. As a class, we wrote the 5 most valued things we believe we should be as a class:

1.       To be a positive role model in and out of the classroom.

2.       Everyone is human so don’t treat them differently.

3.       Respect, listen and include other people.

4.       Treat people how you want to be treated.

5.       Have an ‘I can, I will’ attitude.

As the oldest children in the school, we will take on lots of extra responsibilities in and out of the classroom such as hall monitors, playleaders, collective worship set up, charity and helping staff around school with as much as we can!

Our classroom is a bright, calm and relaxing environment where we showcase all that we love about learning from reading to History to Spiritual spaces!

Mr Codling has been teaching for a long time (he was a teacher back in the last millennium!) and he loves working with KS2 children, encouraging us to develop greater independence and responsibility. He aims to stimulate a love of learning, and help us develop into “confident, switched-on young people with a good work ethic and respect for all.”  This fits in with our class identity.

We hope to have a fantastic year together and keep you up to date with our adventures through learning!

Otsuka Class - Spring Term 2026

Bikeability

Our Year 5 children took part in a two-day Bikeability course this half term.  They enjoyed learning lots of new skills – even if they were a little bit cold!  Cycle safely Year 5.

English

In English we have been inspired by the novel Cosmic, which tells the story of Liam Digby - an eleven year old boy who looks like a grown up.  Liam gets up to all sorts of adventures and we focused on when he ended up visiting the Porsche showroom.... We all fancied going for a test drive - but not in Mr Codling's old banger!

Geography

Geography this half term has seen us comparing what it would be like to live in the Alps and comparing that to life in Scissett.  Cue the snow, just to make it more realistic.  We found out that there are lots of things to do in our local area, as our maps show.  We also had a go at producing some brochures to highlight some of the premier tourist destinations we had seen.  No class trip to Mont Blanc though...

Science

Science has gone with a bang, a pop and a fizz!  We explored changes in materials and discovered that some were reversible and some were not.  We made plaster of paris and explored how citric acid and washing powder react to produce gases.  We also saw how acetic acid (vinegar) and sodium bicarbonate can create a rocket (and make your desk smell like the chippy, according to Niamh...).

Plastic Pollution

On a very wet and windy Monday afternoon, our Year 5 children went on a local walk to look at plastic pollution in the area. The children looked carefully to identify what plastic litter they could see and also checked to see where the litter bins were located around our school.
The evidence they have collected together with responses from their recent questionnaire will help them look at plastic pollution as part of their Geography work this term.

Children in Need

As part of the Children in Need activities, Y5 and Y2 enjoyed their class share, sharing their best 25 jokes. Mr Codling set the scene by telling his dad jokes, it could only get better…
