Welcome to Dr Seuss Class

Teachers: Mr Codling and Mrs Martin.  Teaching assistant:  Mrs Brook
Hello and welcome to our Year Five class, taught by Mr Codling and Mrs Brook, with Mrs Martin on Friday.
Mr Codling has been teaching for a long time (he was a teacher back in the last millennium!) and he loves working with older KS2 children, encouraging us to develop greater independence, responsibility and prepare us for our move on to Middle School. He aims to stimulate a love of learning, and help us develop into “confident, switched-on young people with a good work ethic and respect for all.”  This fits in with our class identity.  Dr Seuss was an inspirational author and illustrator who strongly believed in the power of positive thought and celebrated individuality.  Our classroom reflects lots of his key messages
We believe our classroom should be a safe and happy environment, where everyone is respected and feels able to try new things, offer suggestions and learn through making mistakes. We want to get the most out of our last year here at Scissett CE Academy – and give something back as well!
As we are the oldest class in school, we take on additional responsibilities, such as being Play Leaders, Collective Worship monitors, librarians and various other roles in school.
Our classroom is bright and cheerful, with lots of interactive displays, and different learning zones. We do lots of different topics: this year this includes Ancient Greece, Space, Extreme Weather and the Victorians. We have fun, as well as doing our best work, and we love earning table treasures.  Our table groups are named after some of Dr Seuss' iconic characters; we are Cat in the Hat, Sam I Am, Fox in Socks, The Lorax, Horton and Yertl the Turtle.  If you were looking for the Grinch, he is usually the one at the front wearing a tie!

Dr Seuss Class - Spring Term 2024

Art with Kittie Jones

In art lessons, Year 5 have been creating mixed media landscapes. The children discovered the artist Kittie Jones and her artwork inspired their own pieces. They loved experimenting with colour and using different techniques.

Dr Seuss Class - Autumn Term 2023

Scissett Bake Off

In DT with Mrs Whittle, Year 5 have been learning about making bread. We designed and made our own festive bread. They tasted delicious! Well done Year 5!

Science

This term, we have been studying the Earth and space.  We have learned lots of facts about our solar system and how phenomena such as the seasons happen.  As an experiment, we made sundials to try and predict how far the shadow made by the gnomon would mave during the day.  Some of us had some very accurate results and some of us...well, let's just say that we would have been late for school.  Thannk goodness we don't need sundials today!

Ancient Greek Day

We had a fabulous day, travelling back in time to Ancient Greece with our visitor for the day, Nick-credible from Dan-tastic Education.  We all looked the part, spending the day in character as we explored what life was like for the Greeks during the classical period.  We listened to legends, saw amazing architecture and even got chance to wear a Corinthian helmet.  We also got the chance to handle real coins that dated back thousands of years.  The day finished with us having the chance to try some traditional Greek foods.  It was a big thumbs up for pitta bread and humuus, but the olives were more of an acquired taste!

Baking

To help raise money to support school visits and trips for this year, Dr Seuss class held a bake sale.  We whipped up several batches of cup-cakes and, supported by generous donations from home, held a sale after school on the 6th October.  We raised almost £100 to go towards school trips.  Awesome!

French

We have been working hard to improve our French vocabulary this half term, describing ourselves in greater detail, and talking about the school subjects that we like.  Didier, our French puppet, has been on hand to test us and help us pefect our French accents!
